‘Night of long knives’ at Szczecin City Hall
On Thursday, 28th November, it was announced by Szczecin City Council that three senior members of staff would be dismissed, and that a further two would be demoted.

The three to be relieved of their responsibilities are: Elżbieta Masojć, a former vice-president of Szczecin, Sebastian Wypych, the head of the sailing center, and Elżbieta Szklarska. The reason given was that the President of Szczecin, Piotr Krzystek, had lost confidence in them. These dismissals follow police investigations of irregularities in the tender process for city investment, particularly regarding the development of the sailing center.
The sacking of Elżbieta Masojć has apparently shocked a number of Szczecin city councillors, who have described her as being, “honest, competent, reliable and hard-working”. It has been suggested off the record that the true reason for her dismissal was a poor working relationship with vice-president Krzysztof Soska, and that pani Masojć has been made a convenient scapegoat to hide the failings of others.
The dismissal of Sebastian Wypych has angered and saddened workers at the sailing center, who have written to the administration of the city of Szczecin, describing the decision as “unfair”, and accusing the city of “punishing the innocent”.
The President of Szczecin, Piotr Krzysek, has refused to comment on the subject of the sackings, conveniently claiming this to be a matter for the judicial system.
Interstingly, Elżbieta Masojć happens to be Piotr Krzstek’s former Polish teacher at Liceum No 5. The Szczecinian wonders if she currently regrets ever having given him a poor mark.
