The Szczecinian says – give the Sedina statue the go ahead
In 1898, in what is now Plac Tobrucki, Ludwig Manzel unveiled his magnificent statue of Sedina. Today, all that remains on the square is a single, solitary fountain with an anchor. There is no trace of Sedina, nor of the other deities that surrounded her.
The statue of Sedina, which was a symbol of the city and its prosperity for almost half a century, is no longer with us. Recently, however, Stowarzyszenie Kupcy dla Szczecina, ‘the Society of Szczecin traders’, has attempted to make the city take action, and restore this monument. The Szczecinian would ask why have new fountains been built outside Pleciuga theatre and the Garrison church, yet this historic monument has yet to be restored?
It would appear that the idea of returning Sedina to her rightful place has been blocked by those who see Sedina only as a ‘Teutonic’ deity, and a symbol of the time when Szczecin was in German hands.
Four thousand Szczecinians, however, disagree, and what’s more, have signed a petition to bring Sedina back to the city. All that is being asked for is the agreement of the city to restore Sedina’ to her former pomp and glory, and not money, as the estimated cost of 3 million PLN would be met independently by ‘the Society of Szczecin Traders’.
The project for Sedina’s restoration was accepted by Szczecin city council on October 22nd, 2012, with 22 councillors voting in favour, 8 against, with two abstentions. There now seems a reasonable likelihood that this magnificent symbol of pre-war Szczecin, which has no connection whatsoever with the Nazis, may now return to Szczecin.
