8.10.2013 “Father of the world, this letter detailing my story is a cry for help on behalf of all wronged children in Poland. I am writing on behalf of many unknown victims, who remain anonymous. Through the help of a series of lessons, I am able to talk about this; many do not have such bravery.”

Polish victim of clerical child abuse appeals to pope

The above quote was written by Marcin K, who was molested by a priest in Kołobrzeg at the age of twelve. He is now in the middle of a civil case against the diocese of Koszalin-Kołobreg, from which he is demanding two hundred thousand PLN in compensation.

Marcin K is one of those mentioned in a book about the victims of pedophile priests by Ekke Overbeek. At the age of twenty, he informed the procurator of his experience. He then began to contact other victims of the same priest, Zbigniew R, but only one agreed to testify. The priest was sentenced to two years imprisonment after the case had gone to the Appeal Court.

Marcin K began his civil case last week. He was hoping it would be uncontested, but the diocese has refused. It was than that he decided to write to the pope.

Marcin K described his experiences to the radio station TOK FM as follows:

At the age of twelve he was picked up by the priest, who had just performed a funeral,  in a cemetery in Kołobrzeg …

“He offered to take me home, but instead took me to the priest’s house where the surplices were kept. I had agreed to be picked up with a child’s innocence, unaware of the trauma that would affect my future life.  The ‘man in a dress’ then led me to his room, sat down and asked me to come closer. He then used me to satisfy himself, touching me in intimate places and kissing me. If he disobeyed his demands, he started shouting and forced me into acts no child should ever be required to perform. This situation continued a few times, every two or three days.”

Marcin K has asked the pope how the Polish church is different to that in the USA, Ireland and Germany, where the dioceses have all paid compensation.

“Am I asking for a bit too much from rich bishops, who live in beautiful palaces and drive expensive bishop’s limousines? Is two hundred thousand PLN (67k EUR) a bit too much for a bishop?”

The Polish Church have replied that it is not the church, but rather the priest, who should pay damages.

In his letter to the pope, Marcin K continued: “I ask your Holiness, as a pastor, is it possible to have such an attitude to a victim? All that the Polish church is able to do for me and other victims of pedophile priests, according to bishop Tadeusz Pieronek, is to pray. The church hierarchy have convinced the media that they will not pay compensation! This letter, detailing my story, is a cry for help on behalf of all wronged children in Poland. I am writing on behalf of many unknown victims, who remain anonymous. Through the help of a series of lessons, I am able to talk about this; many do not have such bravery.”
